About us

The Bay of Plenty region is home to over 10 Badminton clubs catering to social and competitive badminton for all ages.

The BOPBA Staff - Delwyn Cooper, Tarryn Espitalier, Doanld Koh & Matthew O'Connor work throughout the region, offering a range of services from:

  • Introductory skills to children utilising the BWF Shuttle Time programme, a programme that focuses on introducing basic Badminton coaching skills to teachers and coaches working with school aged children,

  • Support & development for clubs and their volunteers,

  • Support and development for coaches

  • Training and event opportunities for players of all ages and abilities.

We work closely with Badminton New Zealand to  "Inspire Kiwis to Love Badminton for Life."

Our Team

What opportunities are available for Juniors?
  • Each year, Bay of Plenty Badminton hold interschool tournaments for the following age groups through out the regions in terms 2 & 3:

  • Intermediate – years 7–8

  • Junior – years 9–10

  • Seniors – years 11–13

  • Children are invited to trial for spaces in the BOP Rep teams that travels to Palmerston North each July to compete in the New Zealand Junior Team Championships.

  • Tauranga is fortunate to also be the host town for the AIMS Games for years 7–8 every September which attracts students from far and wide – start thinking about getting your students into the game at year 5–6.

What opportunities are available for Adults?
  • We run pre-season trainings and box doubles leagues

  • We run interclub tournaments, Masters and ABCD Tournaments

  • Adults are invited to trial for spaces in the BOP Seniors, Masters (35+), Veterans (50+) and Super Veterans (60+) Rep teams who compete over different weekend throughout the playing season

Get involved in Badminton!

Get involved in badminton across the region:

Junior pathways through school programmes, interschool tournaments, and representative teams.

  • Club competitions and social play for players of all skill levels

  • Coaching and development opportunities for players, teachers, and volunteers

  • Regional leagues, tournaments, and representative teams for competitive players

  • Encourage your students to join their school and a club

  • Volunteer to help at school, with tournaments, coaching or on club committees or the BOPBA Board.
